I’m mid wipe of the burgundy leather sofa when the familiar queasiness causes my stomach to lurch. I look around in panic because time is of the essence. I’m able to retrieve the mini wastebasket just as what little contents in my stomach make their exit. This is the second time this morning. Dry heaves begin to wrack my body since I didn’t have much in my stomach to begin with. Tears stream down my face from the effort. It isn’t until I feel my French braid being swept back that I see expensive boat shoes in my view. I don’t have to look up to know it’s Kassius.

“She’s done for the day,” I hear him say. I look up slightly to see him waving off Jacob who was staring from the doorway.

“That’s not necessary. I’m okay. I just need to brush my teeth. There’s no reason I can’t finish my shift.”

“You need to get checked out,” Kassius challenges.

“It may be the chemicals I’m using to clean,” I try again.

“You weren’t around these chemicals when you vomited yesterday. How many times has this happened?”

I contemplate on whether to divulge the truth, but the seriousness in his stare has me spilling the beans. “Once yesterday and this is the second time today. I threw up earlier before work.”

“That’s not normal. Your body is trying to tell you something.”

“Tell me what? I’m coming down with something?”

“Or maybe it’s telling you that you’re pregnant.” He stares at me with ferocious intensity.

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

“Tell me you haven’t fucked Silas without protection. Better yet, tell me when your last period was?”

“Oh, my God! You’re so crass. Why are you so serious all of a sudden?” I stand and grab a napkin from my cleaning cart. Kassius snatches it from my hand.

“Don’t use that shit. It can be covered in chemicals. If you are pregnant, you sure as hell don’t want to be that careless. Let me get you a towel.” He darts out the room while I stand here slack-jawed. He is back in an instant. I take the towel from him and wipe my mouth.

“I don’t think I’m pregnant,” I say.

“But you can’t be sure.”

I nod in agreement. I pull my phone from my pocket to look at my handy dandy period app. A lump forms in throat, my mouth dry. I stare at the app in denial.

“How late are you?” Kassius asks, already guessing that I am.

“Two weeks.” I’m in shock. I need to sit down. “Do you think there is a chance it’s just a coincidence?”

“Not likely, buttercup.”

“I can’t be.” My upper lip quivers.

“It’s no longer up to you. You both gave up that decision when you let him enter you raw.”

“I need to take a test. I need to be sure.”

“I’ll get you a test for the visual proof, but we both know what the result will be.”

I nod again, but I still need the confirmation. “You can’t say anything to Silas. Please, Kassius.”

“That’s between you two, but that’s not exactly something you should keep from him.
